Writing as a Way of Coping During the Two Week Wait

coping during the two week wait with infertilityThe two week wait between the end of your fertility treatment cycle and your beta hCG blood test, the test that confirms, or denies, a pregnancy, can be agonizing.

Writing can help you cope during the two week wait.

Heal with writing during the two week wait

Writing – keeping a journal, jotting thoughts down, or typing – is a therapeutic form of expression that allows the thoughts to be expressed in a way that can lead to healing.

One technique I use is to get two pieces of paper.

On one – write your worry thoughts and feelings-the thoughts that seem to repeat in your head. Writing them and getting them out on a piece of paper can be a helpful form of expression.

Take a minute, breath and check in with how you feel. Put the paper face down.

One the other piece of paper – think of and write an intention for yourself for that hour, day or week.

An intention can be a thought such as:

“I am doing what I need to be right now.”

“ I am doing all I can now to get pregnant. ”

It can be a way to think about how you’d like to embrace the hours, days ahead. As you set and write your intentions, notice how you feel.

Choose a place to write that evokes a positive feeling in you. Perhaps it’s a room in your house, a place that brings you peace and joy, a spot outside in nature.

Research has shown that writing for 20 minutes has therapeutic benefits and can help with healing from emotional trauma. If you can write for 20 minutes, give it a try.
