With IVF, persistence pays off

Couples struggling with infertility will tell you that IVF can be draining- physically, emotionally and financially.

Most couples undergoing in vitro fertilization need to face a tough decision each time the procedure fails; should they continue to invest and try again, or should they give up?

After how many failed attempts is it reasonable to say their chances for success are minimal?

A large study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, has found that nearly two-thirds of women undergoing I.V.F. will have a child by the sixth attempt, suggesting that persistence can pay off, especially for women under 40.

Every couple needs to have emotional support from friends, family members and mostly from each other in order to make the decision to try again, or move on.
